About

It was late-July 2016 when I met Jonathan Horne for the first time. I was hosting the 5th Acorn Acoustic Session (at that time still in De Akker, Stellenbosch) when he walked in with a guitar and asked if he could play a few songs. He said apologetically:” But I do not know any covers, I only do my own songs.” We have been playing together ever since!

Having met at an Acorn Acoustic Session, Jonathan and Gustav formed Antrim, a folk-rock fusion and a vessel for Jonathan’s craft. In 2018 they recorded four singles (Andringastraat, Mornington Road, Polka Dots, Uranium) at Blue Room Studios Produced by Jo Ellis. They have played across the Western Cape, surprising audiences with sets consisting of original material only.

After their release of Uranium, Hugo Veldsman (local musician, classically trained guitarist and also an Acorn Acoustic Session artist) joined the band. This adds another dimension to Antrim’s sound. Let’s just say that Hugo is a David Gilmour fan. His tasty, languid playing style, reflects that.

Jonathan Horne
Jono wrote his first song under a tree, in his aunt’s garden, in Britz (South Africa), when he was twelve.

Gustav Franzsen
Gustav is a very late-starter as a muso. He has, however, been a voracious consumer of music ever since he bought his first vinyl, Springbok Hits #13. He passed some piano exams in primary school, but never played any instruments seriously in public, until he took up the bass at age 55!

Since then he has played in and for numerous bands, including Witzenbergies, Slow Boat, Odd Dogs, Deadpan Alley, Bloudraad, Gert Vlok Nel and the legendary Blues Broers. He is currently playing for Wilde Als, Hugo Veldsman & The Rendezvous and, of course, Antrim.

Hugo Veldsman
Hugo studied classical guitar and completed his BMus degree at Stellenbosch University in 2018. He specialized in Guitar Performance. He has played with and in numerous acts, including Light and Shade, Jeandré Swanepoel’s project. Recently Hugo has also taken up lap-steel guitar with a real vigour.

Hugo also performs on his own, playing his own compositions and covers he likes.
